A statement attributed to Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has spread on social media, saying: “Hezbollah must be expelled from Lebanon”.
Kashif verified the statement and found it to be fake. Kashif’s team reviewed the latest statements of the caretaker Prime Minister Mikati and did not find any reference to the expulsion of Hezbollah from Lebanon.
Mikati had stated during an emergency government meeting after his return from the United Nations General Assembly, on 28 September 2024, that his country was facing a great danger following the Israeli raid that led to the assassination of former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.
He stressed the government’s continued performance of its duty in cooperation with the people, expressing his apology for any shortcomings, emphasizing the role of the army and security forces in protecting the homeland. He also announced taking measures to alleviate the suffering of the displaced, indicating that solidarity is the strongest response to the Israeli aggression.
The Lebanese authorities announced on Saturday, 28 September 2024, a three-day mourning period throughout the country, starting next Monday, during which flags will be flown at half-mast on all official departments, public institutions, and municipalities, following the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.
Najib Mikati also said in a press conference held on Sunday, 29 September 2024, that his government “will not fail to pursue the diplomatic role and there is no choice but diplomacy.” He added that the number of displaced people in Lebanon due to the Israeli bombing could reach one million people.
