A photo of a tanker with the name “Anwaar Al Naser” has been circulating on social media, with the following claim: “Anwaar Al Naser in Israel, a Libyan oil tanker docked at the port of Haifa coming from Tripoli.”
Kashif verified the image via “Google Images” tool and found that it is old and the claim is misleading. On 15 August 2014, the “libyaherald” published the image in a report titled: “Another fuel tanker enters Tripoli port loaded with 14 million liters of gasoline.” The website added in the description of the image: “The fuel tanker Anwaar Al Naser arrived at Tripoli port carrying 14 million liters of gasoline.”
The Libyan News Agency reported on 14 August 2014, quoting the Libyan National Oil Corporation and the Brega Oil Marketing Company, that the quantities of fuel withdrawn by the distribution companies from the temporary distribution point in the port of Tripoli amounted to one million four hundred and forty liters of gasoline, and the ships were supplied with it for distribution.
The National Oil Corporation denied in a statement dated 21 August 2024 via its account on “X” the circulated claim, considering it “an attempt to confuse the corporation” and added that “the competent administration is in continuous communication and closely monitoring the movement of tankers and shipping operations through modern and reliable monitoring and navigation systems on the movement of tankers around the world, including the Mediterranean basin.”
Kashif’s team also tracked the path of the tanker “Anwaar Al Naser” via “ marinetraffic ” on 22 August 2024 , and found that it was heading towards the island of Cyprus and not the port of Haifa.
