A clip of an injured young man was widely shared with the claim it’s of Gazan activist Saleh Al-Jafarawi faking injury during the heavy Israeli shelling on the Gaza Strip. The misleading video was shared with the hashtag “Pollywood”, casting doubt on Palestinians killed and injured in the Gaza Strip and accusing Palestinians of acting to gain international sympathy.

The claim: Gazan activist Saleh Al-Jafarawi faking injury

The correction: the clip is old, and shows an injured young man, Mohammad Zindeeq from Ein Shmas refugee camp in Tulkarm, not activist Saleh Jafarawi.

Kashif verified the authenticity of the clip. The young man seen in it is Mohammad Zandeeq from Ein Shams in Tulkarm, not activist Al-Jafarawi. The clip was first published on 19 August 2023 by user ‘Hamodahmdan1’ on TikTok along the following hashtags: #yoki #Ein-shams-camp.

Kashif contacted Yousef Zandeeq, Mohammad’s father, who confirmed that the clip is in fact of his son, who is also known as Yoki, after being hit by a shell that led to the amputation of his leg following a previous storming of Nour Shams camp in Tulkarm on 24 July 2023.
