A video circulated on WhatsApp groups features “Allah Akbar” chants coming out of a building, with the claim that it documents chants by Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons following the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza on 15/1/2025. The video was accompanied by the description: “Chants of prisoners in Israeli jails celebrating the announcement of the deal. Allahu Akbar.”
Kashif verified the video via “Google Images” and found the claim to be misleading. The video is old and dates back to 8/12/2024. It actually shows chants by prisoners in Roumieh Prison in Lebanon celebrating the fall of the Assad regime.
Al Jazeera Syria shared the video on its “X” on 8/12/2024, with the caption: “Celebrating the fall of the Assad regime… chants of prisoners in Roumieh Prison in Lebanon after opposition factions took control of Damascus and Homs.”
Radio Fresh also posted the same video on its Facebook page on 8/12/2024, with the caption: “Celebrating the fall of the Assad regime… chants of prisoners in Roumieh Prison in Lebanon after the military operations management took control of Damascus and Homs.”
On 15/1/2025, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani announced a ceasefire agreement between Hamas in Gaza and the Israeli government. The agreement will take effect on Sunday, 19/1/2025, with the exact timing to be announced later.
Separately, on 27/11/2024, opposition factions in Syria launched a military operation named “Deterrence of Aggression.” On 8/12/2024, they announced via a televised statement the liberation of Damascus and the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, whose regime lasted for 24 years. The opposition also declared the release of all detainees.
