A repeat of 7 October 2023—or the most difficult event since then. That is how the night of Friday–dawn of Saturday, 30 August 2025, in al-Zaytoun neighborhood, southeast of Gaza City, was described. The incident received intensive coverage across media outlets and social media platforms, with analysts suggesting it could mark a central turning point in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. This report tracks the nature of the media coverage and what was later revealed about the reality of what happened.

    Sequence of Events

The story first appeared through Al Jazeera, citing Israeli media reports that spoke of a “serious incident” in Gaza that left one soldier dead and others injured, with Israeli helicopters evacuating troops under fire.

Coverage continued with reports of heavy Israeli air activity over Gaza and rising casualties among Israeli forces, sparking talk of a major security incident. A video circulated claiming to show Israeli airstrikes following the clashes.

Israeli outlets later reported that the incident took place in al-Zaytoun, where al-Qassam Brigades had ambushed Israeli forces using night-vision surveillance, killing one soldier and wounding nine others.

Media coverage escalated when reports emerged of a “third security incident” in Gaza, with multiple fatalities among Israeli soldiers and critical injuries, alongside news that six additional helicopters had been dispatched for evacuation.

The most dramatic shift came when speculation turned to the possibility that Hamas fighters had captured Israeli soldiers. Israeli outlets reported that the army had activated the “Hannibal Protocol” to prevent the capture of troops, as reinforcements poured into the area. The targeted forces were later identified as belonging to the 162nd Division and the 401st Brigade.

Headlines soon declared: “Four Soldiers Missing in Gaza.” Reports suggested ongoing clashes, concerns within the Israeli army about soldiers falling into Hamas’ hands, and a wide search operation to locate them.

Later accounts spoke of a fourth security event in al-Zaytoun, with face-to-face gun battles between al-Qassam fighters and Israeli troops continuing three hours after the ambush began.

Gradually, coverage cooled. Reports cited Israeli media saying the army had begun withdrawing soldiers from al-Zaytoun and had reestablished contact with the four missing troops. Israeli military censors imposed a publication ban on details about the incident, while al-Qassam released an image carrying the caption: For those who forget… death or captivity.”

In the end, coverage concluded with accounts of one soldier killed, 11 injured, and four reported missing during the ambush in al-Zaytoun.

    Dawn in al-Zaytoun Was Different

Audiences went to sleep believing a strategic shift in the war on Gaza had occurred—awaiting confirmation either from the Israeli army or Hamas. The reality, however, turned out differently. What created the gap between events on the ground and the way they were reported?

-Media outlets, led by Al Jazeera, relied on what they described as “Israeli media,” but did not cite a single named source.

-Al Jazeera appears to have based its coverage on social media pages managed by individuals, not official Israeli media outlets.

-The incident occurred on a Friday night–Saturday dawn 30 August 2025, when official Israeli media typically suspends coverage.

-No reliance was made on official Israeli or Hamas sources, nor on Al Jazeera’s own correspondents or eyewitnesses from the area.

-Several unofficial Israeli social media outlets, such as Hadashot Akhshav and News Without Censorship, were active, but these are not credible references and require extreme caution.

    The Official Narrative

According to The Times of Israel, seven soldiers were injured in al-Zaytoun after an explosive device detonated. One soldier sustained moderate wounds, while six suffered minor injuries. Five were discharged after receiving treatment.

The Israeli army later announced the death of Staff Sergeant Ariel Lubliner in southern Gaza on 30 August 2025, raising the number of Israeli military deaths to 900—456 of them in Gaza—since the ground invasion began on October 27, 2023.

For its part, al-Qassam Brigades released an image at dawn on August 30 with the message: For those who forget… death or captivity.” Later that evening, the Brigades claimed responsibility for destroying an armored personnel carrier with a powerful explosive device near Gaza University, south of al-Zaytoun, and reported that helicopters were seen landing to evacuate casualties.
