Social media accounts posted a video clip of a vote in the Security Council, claiming it was a video of the Security Council voting on a resolution to strike Yemen. The clip was accompanied by the following claim: “Breaking: Security Council is voting on the resolution presented by the United States to strike Yemen. 11 votes in favor, 0 against, 4 abstentions. The Security Council has thus approved the resolution to strike Yemen militarily.”

Kashif verified the video clip via the Invid tool and found it to be old and the claim misleading. It was circulated on 11/1/2024, and dates back to the Security Council’s adoption of a resolution demanding that the Houthis halt attacks on ships.

Sky News Arabia posted a video on YouTube of a UN Security Council session on 11/1/2024, with the following description: “The Security Council adopts a resolution demanding that the Houthis halt attacks on ships.” The circulating clip occurs between the 6:47 and 8:08 minutes of the Sky News Arabia video.

The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on 11/1/2024, demanding that the Ansar Allah group (Houthis) immediately cease attacks on ships in the Red Sea and calling on all states to respect the arms embargo imposed on the Houthis.

The resolution, drafted by the United States and Japan, was adopted by a majority of 11 members, with 4 abstentions. It condemned in the strongest terms attacks on ships. The resolution also stipulated the right of UN member states to “defend their vessels against attacks, including those that undermine navigational rights and freedoms.”

Since 15 March, Yemen has been subjected to hundreds of US airstrikes, the most recent of which were a series of raids on the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, Ma’rib, and Hodeidah.
