A Jordanian truck driver opened fire on the Al-Karamah (Allenby) crossing, on Sunday morning, 8 September 2024, killing three Israeli security guards at the crossing: Yohanan Shuri, Yuri Birnbaum, and Adrian Marcelo Podmesser. The operation was followed by a number of inaccurate news, the most prominent are the following:
1- Wrong linking of the photo and name of the perpetrator of the Karameh crossing operation.
A photo of late deputy civil defense officer in northern Gaza, Mohamed Morsi, was circulated on social media, as the perpetrator of the operation. It was also claimed that his name was Khaled Al-Zoubi, as the claim stated: “The perpetrator of the Allenby crossing operation is Abdel Salam Khaled Al-Zoubi from Irbid”.
Kashif verified the image via reverse search on Google, Kashif found that it was incorrectly linked. The image shows the Deputy Director of Civil Defense in northern Gaza, Mohammed Morsi, not of the perpetrator of the Karameh crossing operation, Maher Hussein Al-Jazi.
The spokesman of the Civil Defense Directorate in the Gaza Strip, Mahmoud Basal, told Kashif that the photo is of Deputy Director of Civil Defense in northern Gaza, Muhammad Abdul-Hayy Mursi, who was killed Sunday morning 8 September 2024, after the Israeli occupation shelling targeted his home in Jabalia camp, along three members of his family.
Palestinian media outlets, including Nablus Post, published a video clip documenting the moment Mohamed Morsi was pulled out after his home was targeted, and another clip during his farewell.
The photo was also published , claiming that it belongs to the perpetrator of the operation , named Abdul Salam Khaled Al-Zoubi from Irbid, who shared a photo of his passport with a personal ID in the name of Omar Abdul Majeed Bataineh. However, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation “Kan” published, via its account on the X platform, a photo of the passport of the perpetrator of the operation that took place at the Karameh crossing, who is Maher Diab Al-Jazi, 39 years old, who holds Jordanian citizenship and was born in the village of Adhruh, affiliated with the Ma’an Governorate.
An operation took place Sunday morning, Sunday 8 September 2025, at the Al-Karamah (Allenby) crossing, in which 3 Israeli security guards at the crossing were killed: Yohanan Shuri, Yuri Birnbaum, and Adrian Marcelo Bodmesser, by a Jordanian truck driver, Maher Al-Jazi. The crossing was closed from both sides after the operation took place.
2- Wrong photo shared as the perpetrator of the Karameh crossing operation
A photo of a young man wearing a red shemagh and a white abaya has spread across social media, with claims that its of the perpetrator of the Al-Karama crossing operation, Maher Hussein Al-Jazi.
Kashif has verified the photo via open sources and found that the photo is not of the perpetrator of the Al-Karamah crossing operation, but rather a similarity in names in the first name and last name. The young man to whom the photo belongs is called Maher Qasim Muhammad Al-Jazi, and the perpetrator of the operation is called Maher Diab Hussein Al-Jazi.
The brother of the young man who appears in the picture, Khaled Qasim Al-Zaji, also published a post in which he explained that the picture is of his brother, and what happened is a similarity in names. The post read: “#Notice! The owner of the attached picture has nothing to do with the operation, but rather a similarity in names. The person in the picture is named Maher Qasim Muhammad Al-Jazzy, and he is my brother, one of the public servants, and he is currently at work.”
3- An fabricated statement by Major General Fayez Al-Duwairi about the Karameh crossing operation
A statement attributed to Al Jazeera’s military analyst, Major General Fayez Al-Dwairi, was widely shared on social media, bearing the news design of Al Jazeera – Jordan, which read: “Fayez Al-Dwairi: This is the first act of the Jordanian resistance, which will surprise the enemy with its strength and secrecy, and will invent methods that neither Jordanian security nor the occupation expected, and we bless this heroic operation”.
Kashif verified the statement and found that it was impersonal. Fayez Al-Dwairi told Kashif that he did not make a statement or analyze the operation, in addition to publishing a clarification on X.
Kashif also looked into Al Jazeera Jordan and Al Jazeera pages, and found no such statement published on any of them.
4- Old photo circulates as of the operation at Al-Karamah crossing
A photo showing Israeli occupation soldiers in a crossing-point has spread on social media, with the claim that it is from the site of the shooting operation at the Karameh crossing that took place Sunday morning, 8 September 2024.
Kashif verified the image via “Google Images”, and found that it is old. The image was published by “Al Arabiya ” channel on its website on 10 March 2014, caption reading: “The site of the killing of the Jordanian judge by an Israeli soldier at the Karameh crossing”.
“Israelhayom” also published the circulated photo on 10 March 2014, titled: “Jordanian judge killed in Allenby Hall”.
5- An old photo from Nablus is recently republished with the claim that it is from Jordan, coinciding with the Karameh crossing operation.
A picture of sweets, with the words “Blood for Blood” written on it, has recently spread on social media , with the claim that it was of distributing sweets in Jordan after the killing of 3 Israeli security personnel at the Karameh crossing.
Kashif verified the image via “Google images” and found that it is old and that the claim is misleading. “Palestine Today” website published it on 26 February 2023 and stated that the image was taken after the Huwara operation in which two settlers were killed, coinciding with the Aqaba Summit that brought together the Palestinian and “Israeli” sides under Jordanian, Egyptian and American sponsorship.
