Accounts on “ X ” posted a photo showing people inside an airport with a power outage, claiming that it was recently taken at Beirut Airport.
Kashif verified the image using “Google Images” tool, and found that it is old and was incorrectly linked to the recent power outage in Lebanon. The image was published by the “ Al-Nahar Al-Arabi ” website on 17 August 2021, stating that activists on social media platforms shared the image at the time of the power outage inside Rafiq Hariri International Airport (Beirut Airport).
Kashif also found that a number of accounts on Facebook had published the circulating photo on 17 August 2021 stating that it was of Beirut Airport.
The Electricité du Liban announced on Saturday, 17 August 2024, a power outage throughout the country, including essential facilities such as the airport, port and prisons, due to the depletion of fuel operating the last group of production units at the Zahrani plant that supplies Lebanon with electricity, which led to its going out of service.
