Social media has been circulating information claiming the martyrdom of Huda Ghalia, who was standing weeping after losing six members of her family in an Israeli bombing of Gaza in 2006. The claim read: “Huda Ghalia was martyred in Jabalia camp. She is the one in the famous photo on the Gaza beach during an Israeli massacre of her family in 2006.”
Kashif verified the information and found it to be inaccurate, and contacted the owner of the photo who said that she is well and in good health and that she is displaced with her mother and four siblings.
Kashif also contacted journalist Awda Awda, who said that Mrs. Huda Ghalia Abu al-Khair Khader from Jabalia camp was killed, denying it’s Mrs. Huda Ali Ghalia from Beit Lahia, who lost members of her family in 2006.
Journalist Yousef Fares from Gaza, told Kashif that the girl pictured, Huda Ali Ghalia, is fine and well. Confirming that she’s from the town of Beit Lahia. He added that what happened was a similar name situation with a martyr from Jabalia camp named Huda Ghalia Abu al-Khair Khader.
On 9 June 2006, Israeli aircraft targeted Hoda Ghalya’s family on the beach in Beit Lahia, north of the Gaza Strip. A photo of Hoda crying next to her family went viral. The attack resulted in the martyrdom of her father and five of her siblings, who were killed by a shell fired from an Israeli warship while they were relaxing on the beach.
According to an update from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza on 16 July 2025, 94 martyrs arrived at Gaza Strip hospitals over 24 hours, bringing the death toll from the Israeli occupation’s aggression to 58,573 martyrs and 139,607 injuries since 7 October 2023.
