A text message sent from a number bearing Al Jazeera’s name to Palestinian numbers circulated on social media, urging people to contact the company if they are interested in working with it. The message read: “If you would like to be a citizen journalist, contact us on Telegram @AljazeeraPR.”
Kashif verified the account’s authenticity and found it to be impersonal. Kashif contacted the management of Al Jazeera Media Network in Qatar, which confirmed that the account was impersonal and is not affiliated with Al Jazeera Media Network. It also published a statement on its X account, which read: “The International Communications Department of Al Jazeera Media Network confirms that there is no page in its name on the Telegram platform, and warns against interacting with suspicious messages calling for interaction and registration in a fake account in Al Jazeera’s name on Telegram. It urges users to always verify the source of these messages and follow Al Jazeera’s official accounts.”
Al Jazeera Network is an international Arabic news channel founded in 1996 and headquartered in Doha, Qatar. It is considered one of the most influential media platforms in the Arab world and includes several channels specializing in sports, children’s, and documentaries.
