Facebook accounts posted a video documenting the moment a mosque in the Gaza Strip was bombed. The video shows the sound of the call to prayer beginning, with the following claim attached: “The muezzin was martyred during the call to prayer, along with those who were with him in the mosque.”
Kashif verified the video by searching the name of the photographer who appears in the clip and found that it had been manipulated. The original video was circulated in November 2024 and does not include the call to prayer. The mosque was empty at the time of the attack.
Journalist Khamis Al-Rifi posted the video on his Instagram account on 23/11/2024, with the following description: “The moment Al-Farouk Mosque was bombed after receiving a warning in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.” A closer look at the video revealed that it did not include the call to prayer.
Kashif also contacted journalist Al-Rifi, who confirmed that the Israeli occupation army had threatened at the time to target Al-Farouq Mosque, which appears in the video, and therefore no citizens were present inside or around it.
The Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs in Gaza reported on 18/2/2025, that the Israeli occupation army had completely or partially destroyed 1,109 mosques out of 1,244 in the Gaza Strip. The ministry confirmed that 89% of the Strip’s mosques had been destroyed.
