Accounts on “X” published a video clip of a group of people clapping and chanting the phrase “Free Palestine” with the claim that the video is of a celebration in the Netherlands after the events that erupted in Amsterdam between young men and fans of the Israeli Maccabi team on the evening of Thursday 7/11/2024, the video was accompanied by the following text: “The Dutch celebrate after teaching the Israelis a lesson they will not forget.”
Kashif verified the video via Google and found that it is old and the claim is misleading. The video was published by photojournalist Moataz Azaiza on his Instagram account on 25/5/2024 during his participation in a panel discussion entitled “Freedom of the Press: Dealing with the Changing Media Landscape,” which was organized by the World Press Photo Foundation in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam.
Azaiza also posted another video on the same date, 25/5/2024, documenting a speech he gave at the same event, in which he thanked the World Press Photo Foundation for hosting him to represent Palestine and the Gaza Strip. He also praised the foundation’s work in guiding photojournalists, storytellers, and audiences around the world, especially in Palestine and the Gaza Strip.
Maccabi Tel Aviv fans tore up the Palestinian flag and chanted anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian slogans in the Dutch capital Amsterdam, which led to clashes between young men and the club’s fans. Meanwhile, the Dutch police announced the arrest of 62 people following the incident.
