Accounts<\/a>\u00a0on X recently posted\u00a0a video showing a group of ferries full of passengers, accompanied by the following claim: \u201cHindus flee Bangladesh after many of them were subjected to heinous crimes at the hands of Muslims\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Kashif verified the video via the \u201cINVID\u201d tool and found that it is old and the claim is misleading. It was published by the \u201c\u00a0GALIB HASAN RIMON<\/a>\u00a0\u201d channel on YouTube on 9 May 2024, accompanied by the following text in Bengali: \u201cTraditions of the Southern Region are Disappearing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

The owner of the channel \u201cGALIB HASAN RIMON\u201d explains in his description that the aim of creating the channel is \u201cto highlight the entertainment and cultural heritage of Bangladesh.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Kashif’s team also found that a group of accounts on social media platforms published the video clip in May 2024, including the \u201c\u00a0Assiv ti Lassiv<\/a>\u00a0\u201d account on Facebook, which attached the clip with the following text: \u201cThousands of Eid passengers on the deck of the ship\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

While the video was published by channels on YouTube in June, such as \u201c\u00a0ARBUR VLOGS<\/a>\u00a0\u201d and in July, such as \u201c\u00a0Max Ber<\/a>\u00a0\u201d, the channels stated that the video was from Bangladesh.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kashif’s team verified the video and found the name of one of the ferries, \u201ckarnaphuli \u2013 13\u201d, and through searching the name of the ferry, it turned out that it was displayed on the \u201c\u00a0Seat Booking<\/a>\u00a0\u201d website, which is a Bangladeshi-owned website based in Mirpur, Dhaka, and provides booking information in Bangladesh.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Bangladesh is a\u00a0Muslim-majority<\/a>\u00a0country of about\u00a0170 million<\/a>\u00a0people, with Hindus being the country’s largest religious minority, making up 8% of the population. Hindus are a key and steadfast support base for the Awami League party led by outgoing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hundreds of Hindu homes, businesses and temples were vandalized after Hasina’s ouster, Reuters reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new\u00a0Bangladeshi government<\/a>\u00a0has said it is working to resolve the attacks that Hindus and other religious minorities say they have been subjected to.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resigned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina faced\u00a0marches led by university students\u00a0last July against the decision to re-impose employment quotas in the public sector, which later turned into massive demonstrations that toppled Hasina and forced her to flee the country.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
