Social media accounts have recently published a group of videos of demonstrations against Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, claiming that they are a recent attempt to overthrow the regime.
Kashif verified the videos via “Google Images” and found that they are old and the claim is misleading. The videos show demonstrations against Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi that took place in Egypt in September 2019, not recently.
First: A video clip of a group of demonstrators chanting slogans including “Al-Sisi must go, lengthwise and widthwise,” and the clip was accompanied by the following claim: “The Egyptians moved to overthrow the Al-Sisi regime. Say don’t be afraid, Al-Sisi must go.”
By going through the circulated video, Kashif’s team found that Al Jazeera presenter Hossam Yehia had posted it on his account on “X” on 21/9/2019, accompanied by the following text: “Talat Harb Street leading to Tahrir Square a short while ago, chants saying don’t be afraid, Sisi must go, the people want to bring down the regime.”
Second: A video clip showing a group of young men tearing up a banner with a picture of President Sisi on it, with the video accompanied by the following description: “The coming flood in Egypt.”
Kashif’s team found that the video was published by “New Egypt News Website” on YouTube, accompanied by the following text: “Tearing up pictures of Sisi on Al-Alphi Street in downtown Cairo.”
Third: A video clip of a group of protesters tearing up a banner bearing a picture of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, accompanied by the following claim: “The Egyptian people are rewriting their history with their demonstrations against el-Sisi’s dictatorship. Yes, people of Egypt, throw the dictator in the trash.”
Kashif examined the circulated video and found that Al Jazeera had published it on YouTube on 21/9/2019, with the following caption: “Protesters tear up a picture of Sisi in Clock Square in the center of Damietta.”
Fourth: A video clip showing a group of demonstrators chanting “The people want to bring down the regime.” The video was accompanied by the following text: “Egypt, the people want to bring down the regime. Tomorrow the revolution will crush you, you Zionist. Egypt is occupied. Get ready, you Egyptian, for liberation.”
Kashif was able to access a number of accounts that had published the video, including the Baraka on “X” on 21/9/2019, which was accompanied by the following text: “Video | From the chants of the Egyptian demonstrators.”
Fifth, a video clip showing an Egyptian woman, caption reads: “Why does he starve us while he lives in the palaces of the revolution? Tomorrow it will step on you.”
Kashif’s team found that media figure Moataz Matar had posted the video clip on his Facebook account on 21/9/2019 with the following text: “An Egyptian woman to Sisi: ‘Why does he make us hungry while he lives in palaces that we brought him into.. and we are the ones who will carry him?’ Today I tell you, ‘Leave, Sisi.’”
Several demonstrators in several Egyptian governorates went out on Friday, 21/9/2019, chanting slogans against President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in response to calls launched on social media platforms demanding the removal of President El-Sisi, especially by Mohamed Ali, an Egyptian contractor residing abroad, after he directed corruption accusations against the president and leaders of the army. The media also circulated many video clips at the time that documented the demonstrations.
Kashif’s team also went through Egyptian and Arab media outlets and did not find any news about recent demonstrations in Egypt against the Egyptian government.
